BETWEEN CALMNESS AND SEDUCTION
Antenna Space 2014
In 2013, I undertook a solo project titled Between Calmnness and Seduction, which took two years to complete and taught me a new approach to working and employing research methods in my creative practice. This approach involves acknowledging the necessity of cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral information about man and urban architecture as well as natural environments, and the project eventually showcases a re-creation based on documents and materials on modern architectural history while transforming my perceptual knowledge of the subject into video and sculptural works through in-field art experiments.

In this project I have developed a personal study of modern urban development. The starting point for this research is the experience of living in urban Shanghai. In my own city, I have been able to experience the complex relationship between urban development and the needs of people who are shaped by the city as well as shaping it. My purpose here is not to celebrate the resilience of people, but to reflect on the origins of this relationship. From the perspective of architectural history, we find that the planning and design of the modern city has a rational lineage. This lineage takes me back to the late 19th century in Europe, where the contradiction between the concentration of industrial workers and the backwardness of urban amenities led the British government to take the lead in envisioning and planning the future of the city. British architect Ebnezer Howard's 1902 revision and reprint of The Garden City of Tomorrow is the result of this planning. In this book, E.H presents an objective and rational analysis of man and the environment, as well as a clear model for future urban planning and design. His theory focuses on people and their needs as the fundamental starting point for urban planning. This is undoubtedly a valuable reference for the brutal expansion of the power+capital+planned economy of China's urban development.

Another History - A Facsimile of Garden Cities of Tomorrow by Ebnezer Howard is a sketch in which I reproduce in pencil the graphic analysis in Ebnezer Howard's book, as an 'intro' to my project.
等一只鸟 Waiting for a Bird / 单屏录像 Single-Channel Video 11'14''

Based on the characteristics of modern architecture, I made a series of bird's nest. The observation process which lasts for a year was document by video.
